Alex Corretja, clear words on Jannik Sinner
Former Spanish tennis player Alex Corretja to Eurosport sees Jannik Sinner on par with Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz as early as 2024: "He's now ready to win a Slam and to become a strong player on all surfaces. He will be #1 in the world. Until a few months ago, it seemed that Alcaraz was the only one who could beat Djokovic. Today, however, people think there is also Sinner. And that soon there will be Rune" too.
"Sinner is on the right path,” Corretja continued. “He has improved his game a lot. He has added variations that he will need to be ready to win a Slam: he plays more often at the net, he has learned to play drop. To win a Slam you have to be able to do something different. Otherwise you remain always a player who can beat 80%-85% of opponents, but not win the decisive matches in big tournaments. I think he is now 100 percent ready to try".
According to Corretja, even the "missed biscuit" with Rune at the ATP Finals è another indication of his greatness: "He played for himself. He didn’t think about the consequences of winning or losing. These are normal things for a boy of his ageè. Calculations are made later, when you è at another time in your career. È he was a great example of professionalism; focusing only on himself and not on the opponents. I think he was aware of the fact and at peace with himself. Doing something that goes against one’s nature sometimes è counterproductive".
"Besides, who could assure him that he would win in the final against Medvedev? Or that, after eliminating Djokovic, he would still have a good final knowing that he had lost earlier on purpose not to face him? He made the right choice. When you play, you do it to win. Without thinking about what might happen in the future".
