Men`s fractions sink Italy in mixed relay at World Championships in Nove Mesto
France wins the first gold at stake at the World Championships in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic, ahead of Norway and Sweden. Crooked race for Italy, in that mixed relay that gave so many joys to our colors. Didier Bionaz, in the first fraction has to turn twice, giving the change to Tommaso Giacomel in the back positions, with more than two minutes of disadvantage from the head of the race. Tommaso Giacomel also runs into a penalty and the gap rises over 3 minutes.
Then Dorothea Wierer puts her own spin on it and uses only two reloads, bringing Italy back to 13th position, maintaining the 3-minute deficit to France, leading the race. It is Lisa Vittozzi’s turn, who makes a precise and fast first shooting session, moving up to 11th position although without forcing, as by now the race sees Italy far from the podium. Then the Sappadine closed in on the shot with 3 reloads, moving up to 10th place overall with almost 4 minutes to spare. For Friday; è the women’s sprint is scheduled, again with start at 5:20 p.m.
“A black day – says Didier Bionaz -, I had started off quite determined. In the standing shot I don’t know what happened, but è a day to forget. On skis I didn’t even feel bad, but when è like that; è it’s hard to get to the bottom”.
“È went bad – commented Tommaso Giacomel -, I haven’t talked to the girls yet: è a very hard day for and I am very sorry. I tried to take a risk, but starting a race from soì backward is not è easy”.
“The track conditions are very difficult,” said Dorothea Wierer. “There are places on the track where it feels like breaking sticks. I hope they will improve the conditions for Friday. My positive point è was the shooting”.
“Today was a difficult race – Lisa Vittozzi closes -.The whole team certainly expected a better result, but we have to accept that a race can go wrong. Of course, it would have been better not to make a mistake in this very race. Now we have to look ahead and think about the other races”.
