ATP Rotterdam, Lorenzo Sonego Surrenders to Grigor Dimitrov
Lorenzo Sonego eliminated in Rotterdam
Lorenzo Sonego’s path to the Rotterdam tournament, ATP 500 featuring Jannik Sinner as the number 1 seed, ends after only one match played: nothing the Piedmontese tennis player could do against Grigor Dimitrov, an athlete currently ranked 13th in the world rankings: 7-6(4), 6-3 the final score for the Bulgarian, number 6 in the seeding.
Sonego has the merit of contesting until the last bars the first set to a Dimitrov who started well (immediately 2-0) but then also found himself at a disadvantage three times, first on 2-3, then on 3-4 and again on 4-5: reattached Sonego until the tie-break, Dimitrov made on the mini-game conceding only 4 points to his opponent, who paid three points lost on his own serve.
More linear was the progress of the second set: Sonego wasted two important break points at 2-2 and basically his match came to a halt there: Dimitrov won four of the last five games played and went on to earn the match victory and the consequent qualification to the next round of the tournament in the Dutch city.
Sonego was one of the three representatives of the Bel Paese at the Rotterdam ATP, along with Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti: like Musetti (eliminated by host Tallon Griekspoor), the Piedmontese has to leave the draw forò and it is therefore up to Jannik Sinner, engaged in the first round against Botic van de Zandschulp, to hold high the Italian flag.
