World Swimming Championships: Gregorio Paltrinieri takes bronze in the 800 freestyle
A legendary Gregorio Paltrinieri wins a hefty bronze medal in the 800 freestyle, continuing to write his own legendary story. Beating him, overtaking him in the last five hundred meters after Greg had taken the lead from halfway through the race, were Ireland's Daniel Wiffen and European record holder (7'39"19), who just from the Italian snatched the record with fourth place in Fukuoka, gold in 7'40"94 and Australia's Elijah Winnington silver in 7'42"95.
This is the second medal at the World Championships in Doha for the Emilian swimmer, after the silver medal he won in the 4×1.5 km mixed relay in open water. In addition, for Paltrinieri è the 15th medal obtained at the World Championships, in which he obviously remains the Italian swimmer with more individual rainbow podiums, with thirteen placings in the top three positions in eighteen competitions, including finals and direct finals (open water) disputed.
"The side lane is now è a must for me – admitted Paltrinieri at the end of the race -. In Budapest it gave me the'gold in the 1500. Too bad because I was close to silver but I struggled in the last hundred; I am looking for real emotions and when I run races like that I always get so excited. Today I was looking for a good feeling, as if it were the first time and è it" arrived.
