Screaming sevens: 8-6 to Spain and world final
New feat by the Settebello, which takes the world final.
Water polo Italy is celebrating, thanks to the Settebello’s victory over Spain at the ongoing 2024 World Cup in Doha, Qatar. For coach Sandro Campagna’s Azzurri comes an 8-6 win that is worth the finals, to be played next Saturday against the winner of the other semifinal between France and Croatia. Against the same opponents and still in the semifinals, but at the European Championships, a defeat had come a month ago in Zagreb.
The start was not easy for the Azzurri, who failed to unlock a very closed match in which Spain opened the scoring with Larumbe. In the last minute of the first quarter Condemi tied, then è Velotto signed the overtake before Munarriz tied again. It was then first Di Fulvio and then Condemi and Fondelli who signed the scores that allowed Italy to get to halfway through the game on 4-2.
The third period opened in the best possible way thanks to Bruni and Condemi who put the Settebello up 6-2. Larumbe shortens for Spain, which then at the beginning of the last quarter scares the Azzurri: Granados and Munarriz score in fact. The last two minutes are throbbing: Di Fulvio gives Italy a breather, Bustos brings the Iberians back to -1 before Fondelli scores a penalty shot procured by Condemi. And for the Settebello è world final.
