After the success of Lorenzo Sonego, a good victory comes on the Indian Wells debut for Fabio Fognini as well. The Italian Wild Card, in fact, è imposed himself in a comeback against the Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles with the score of 4-6 6-2 6-3, after a marathon that lasted more than three hours, also accomplice the interruption of the match due to rain.
In the first set both players struggled greatly on serve. The first to capitalize, in fact, è the Spaniard who in the fourth game snatches the service from the blue taking to 3-1. However, Fognini immediately manages to turn the situation around and place two consecutive breaks. Suddenly, however, the native of San Remo lost a bit of lucidity, allowing his rival to get back into the match and close the first partial 6-4.
The second set è was also characterized by difficulties in serving on both sides. The inertia of the match, however, shifted in favor of the blue player who, after recovering the break suffered in the opening, twice more snatched the serve from the world number 144 and evened the score at 6-2.
The third and decisive partial è also influenced by the'rain interruption of the match. The return to the court è immediately traumatic for the Ligurian tennis player, who immediately gives up his service going down 3-1. From that moment, however, Fognini manages to raise the level of his tennis by posting as many as five consecutive games and closing the match on 6-3.
In the second round, the San Remo native will face world number 19 Sebastian Baez.
