Milano-Sanremo, Jasper Philipsen thanks Mathieu Van der Poel
Here are the words in the press conference of the top three finishers of the 115th edition of Milan-San Remo won by Jasper Philipsen in a sprint over Mchael Matthews and Tadej Pogacar.
Jasper Philipsen: "I probably would not have won Milano-Sanremo without Mathieu [van der Poel, ed.] On the Poggio descent, I asked him not to attack. He did a great job and I am grateful to him. After the finish, we hugged each other like last year. I am proud that we managed to get two wins in a row. In the last kilometer I was also afraid of making a mistake. If I had not taken this win, it would have been a missed opportunity and I would not have been able to sleep all next week. Michael Matthews è was very fair in the sprint, he did not try to hinder me. It è took me a minute after the finish to realize that I had won. I was not sure".
Michael Matthews: "I have no regrets. I am very proud of my performance. I think I did everything right and I was perfectly placed in the final. The team did a great job. È a little bit hard to digest second place, but I think tomorrow morning I will be happy looking back at how è the race went. I expected to win, but 50 meters from the finish my glasses fell off and that is when Philipsen passed me. I rode together with Tadej Pogačar in the days before the start and è it was nice to find us on the podium. È still young, è a great champion and I am sure we can still race and have fun together".
Tadej Pogacar: "Today’s è one of the best podiums ever. I am very good friends with both of them. I had good feelings and did everything I could to win, as did my team. I tried to attack on the Poggio but could not gain enough margin. I sprinted but there was nothing I could do. I will definitely try again because I want to win this race. In the last three years I finished fifth, fourth and today third. Next year I hope to jump the second place and win".
