The words of Alexander Zverev

Jannik Sinner’s forfeit for Rome is holding sway in the tennis world. Alexander Zverev spoke about it indirectly as well: "I have been on the circuit now for a decade and the question è always been about how we can shorten the season. And it’s not becauseé we don’t love playing tennis, on the contrary. But becauseé è we need to have the time to prepare our bodies for the physicalityà that modern tennis" requires.

"We now have an 11-month season and the ’example è Alex De Minaur, with whom I spoke, played the Davis Cup Finals at the end of November and exactly one month after his first United Cup match. And a month’s stop è really too little. Not è enough to rest né for optimal preparation. Physical preparation does not è how much you train on a tennis court né how much you play. It depends on how much work you can do in the gym, which you cannot do during the season. No other sport has such a short stop period”.

And again: "You’re told you don’t have to play every day but a break day doesn’t è rest. Rest è when you spend time at home, when you sleep in your own bed, be with your family, with your dogs, with your children if you have any. Rest è this. A day between games, if you are in a different place, you donè t rest. And if you get to the bottom of the tournaments, like Jannik or Carlos who always make it to the semifinals or finals, here come the problems”.
