Iga Swiatek drops hat trick in Rome, overwhelms Sabalenka
Iga Swiatek – Aryna Sabalenka 6-2 6-3
Iga Swiatek triumphs at the Internazionali d'Italia for the third time in the last four years. In the final, the world number one left no chance to Aryna Sabalenka, number two in the WTA ranking and seeding, conceding just five games to her. 6-2 6-3 the final score in favor of the Polish accrued after an hour and a half of play.
The first set è one-sided: Swiatek started strong and immediately won a break lead in the third game (2-1), then confirmed (3-1). Sabalenka, contracted and foul, also loses her serve in the seventh game, sending the Pole to serve for the set, which she closes 6-2.
In the second partial Sabalenka tried to fight back, getting a beauty of seven break points between the second and fourth games. The Belarusian, however, fails to convert even one of them, and so she accrues the blow in the seventh game, losing her service. Swiatek, having overcome the danger, confirmed the break lead (5-3) and repeated it in the last game, closing the score on the second match point.
Swiatek becomes the third player in history able to win both Madrid and Rome in the same year after Dinara Safina (2009) and Serena Williams (2013).
Here are Swiatek’s words at the awards ceremony: "Another great final, another great match, thank you for sharing this moment with me. Thank you to those who è here and those at home. The most beautiful thing è that my team è always behind me, so I can only focus on getting better day by day. Thanks to the tournament, the line judges, the ball boys, every year this tournament è more and more beautiful and better".
