Roland Garros: Lorenzo Sonego smiles, Lucia Bronzetti does not
Lorenzo Sonego in second round, regret for Lucia Bronzetti
The first round of Roland Garros starts in a bittersweet way for the Italian colors: in the men’s draw, Lorenzo Sonego overturned the odds against the number 17 seed Ugo Humbert, winning 3 sets to 1 and thus advancing to the next round where he will face Zhang Zhizhen of China; in the women’s draw, on the other hand, Lucia Bronzetti comes within a game of victory against Naomi Osaka, but suffers the decisive comeback right in the final and has to leave the tournament.
Sonego’s match è lasted two hours and 52 minutes: 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 the partials of a match in which the Piedmontese player swerved only in the second set, while controlling without taking big risks the first, third and fourth, placing the decisive breaks at the right moments and winning a prestigious victory in the tournament on the Parisian clay.
Bronzetti, on the other hand, started badly against the former world No. 1, winning only one game in the entire first set. However, the Romagnola won the second set with precision and patience, and in the third she even reached 5-4: the American, however, did not tremble and with three consecutive games she made the match her own, which thus ended 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
Sonego thus continues his run in the tournament that, at the Grand Slam level, has so far given him the best results (fourth round reached twice, in 2020 and 2023), while Bronzetti does not pass the first round for the third consecutive time (in 2022 she was eliminated by Jelena Ostapenko, in 2023 by Ons Jabeur).
