Jannik Sinner wins: how close to overtaking Novak Djokovic and becoming number one
Jannik Sinner debuted with a win at Roland Garros and put even more pressure on world number one Novak Djokovic, who will debut against wild card Herbert on Tuesday. The Italian tennis player sees approaching the top of the Atp rankings after his success against Eubanks, which allowed him to defend the 45 points he earned in the last edition of the Paris Slam.
With this victory, Sinner forces Novak Djokovic to reach the Roland Garros final in order to retain his number one ranking in the ATP rankings. If the Serb is eliminated in the rounds prior to the final, on Monday, June 10, Jannik Sinner will be crowned number one in the world ranking, the first Italian in history.
Novak Djokovic in a press conference on the eve of the tournament spoke this way about his physical condition: "I come with low expectations and high hopes, there are several things that have happened in recent months, but I do not want to open Pandora’s box and talk about these things".
"I know what I am capable of and especially in Slams I play the best tennis; or at least my goal è always that. I think for most of my career I have been able to do that, so that è the goal. I know exactly what I have to do in a Slam".
