Paris 2024 Olympics, historic bronze for Lorenzo Musetti!
100 years after Uberto De Morpurgo, bronze medalist in 1924 in Paris, Lorenzo Musetti in the same city won the same metal by beating in the final for third place the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime with a score of 6-4 1-6 6-3 and entered the history of Italian tennis at the Olympics.
Musetti immediately breaks in the first game though at the fifth chance, keeps the lead until 4-2, gets caught at 4-4 but immediately afterwards goes 0-40 on Auger-Alissime’s serve, breaks at the third chance and then closes the first set by holding the serve at zero.
The second set is dominated by the Canadian who breaks at 2-0, saves a ball of the immediate counterbreak, misses a ball of 4-0 but then anyway the double break comes in the sixth game, the North American ties the score at the second set point.
Lorenzo has two consecutive break points at 2-1 but does not exploit them, but at 4-3 he finally breaks Auger-Aliassime at 15, goes to serve for the match and with a backhand winning short ball closes the accounts after two and a quarter hours of play.
