Jannik Sinner rewrites history and joins exclusive club
Jannik Sinner in very good company
Qualifying for the quarterfinals of the 2024 US Open by beating Tommy Paul in three sets on the Italian night between Monday and Tuesday allows Jannik Sinner to put his signature on an important new record: the South Tyrolean, current world No. 1, is in fact only the eighth player since 2000 to reach the quarters in all Grand Slam tournaments in a single season.
The South Tyrolean è in very good company in this regard: to achieve the same result were Novak Djokovic (from 2010 to 2015, in 2021 and in 2023), Roger Federer (from 2005 to 2012), Rafa Nadal (in 2008 and in the 2010-2011 and 2018-2019 biennia), Andy Murray (in 2011-2012, in 2014 and in 2016), David Ferrer (in 2012 and in 2013), Stan Wawrinka (in 2015) and Andre Agassi (in 2001).
An exclusive club, then, to say the least, to be a part of thanks to his success in the Australian Open, reaching the semifinals at Roland Garros and the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, and, for that matter, qualifying for the quarterfinals of the US Open, which among other things allows him to equal his best result at Flushing Meadows, entry into the top eight in 2022.
To reach this point in the tournament, Jannik Sinner defeated in order the American Mackenzie McDonald three sets to one (the only fraction lost, by the way, so far), and then 3-0 the other American Alex Michelsen, the Australian Christopher O'Connell and another home idol Tommy Paul.
