Matt Gallagher explains why he chose Italy
Matt Gallagher ready to get involved with in Treviso
After two seasons at Bath, a finalist club in the English Premiership just last season, Matt Gallagher has decided to accept the call of Italy, the country of origin of his maternal grandparents, both by accepting coach Gonzalo Quesada’s call-up for the Azzurri’s summer tour (defeat against Samoa, victories against Tonga and Japan) and by deciding to link up with Benetton Rugby, with which he will play the URC and the 2024/2025 Champions Cup.
At the microphones of 'BenTv' the 1996-born fullback explained why he chose the Bel Paese: "Coming to Benetton Rugby for me è a great opportunity; – he said. The boys are coming from two very good seasons and I want to join this path. Plus; Italy è a beautiful place to live; I am pumped to start".
"My grandfather è from Trentino and he comes from Massimeno, a small village near Pinzolo,” he poin added, talking about his origins. When he was 15 years old he è moved to England and met my grandmother. Then my mom was born and about 25 years ago my grandparents came back. Now that I am in Treviso, I am lucky because I can visit them".
Benetton Rugby is coming off a decidedly positive season: in the URC they clinched a playoff spot and qualified for the Champions Cup for the first time since the 2019/2020 season. What’s more, in the past edition of the Challenge Cup, it è climbed all the way to the semifinals, succumbing only to Gloucester, away.
