What changes for Jannik Sinner after Zverev’s knockout: ranking and scoreboard
Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and now Alexander Zverev: yet another excellent elimination at the US Open opens wide a'highway for Jannik Sinner, both in the short and long term. First the immediate: the big opponent for the Blue on the road to the New York title remains in any case Russian Daniil Medvedev. Should he win in the quarterfinals, Sinner would be by far the favorite to win the U.S. Slam.
In the semifinals, Sinner would face the winner between the surprising Briton Jack Draper and Australia's Alex De Minaur, in the finals one between the Americans Taylor Fritz and Francis Tiafoe: all tennis players fully within the reach of the Azzurro, with only De Minaur currently in the Top 10 in the ATP rankings.
But Sinner already smiles for the long-term prospects: hopes of maintaining the number one spot in the ATP rankings until the end of the year are more concrete than ever. In the event of a final success at Flushing Meadows, the year-end supremacy would be mathematical, but even now the ranking smiles on the San Candido outfielder, who è at 9580 points, compared to Zverev’s 7075, Alcaraz’s 6690 and Djokovic’s 5560.
Even if he loses to Medvedev Sinner, who currently has a score of 52 wins from 57 matches played, he would maintain a considerable gap over his pursuers. In the last part of the season the Blue will have to defend the titles won in Beijing and Vienna plus other tournaments for a total of 2180 points, while Zverev, who is second in the rankings, has only 1010 points coming out, but to reach the top the German would have to do much better than 2023, while Sinner drastically worse.
