Matteo Arnaldi exults: “In Davis Cup I have an extra boost.”
A complicated victory, which also came thanks to extra motivation.
Matteo Arnaldi gives Italy a 2-0 win over Brazil in the Davis Cup, thanks to a victory over Thiago Monteiro that was actually a bit more complicated than expected. In fact, the Italian won in three sets, after a real marathon of three hours and 39 minutes. Admitting, however, that the very context helped him gather energy at the most difficult moment.
"I did not want to win my set, I wanted to give a bit more of a show – smiled Arnaldi to the microphones of 'Sky Sport', retracing in particular the comeback suffered in the second set -. Joking aside, he played very well today and è was very good. I didn't play my best game, but I'm glad I stayed there. At one point he was making a lot more than me, I, on the other hand, did not have the cynicism to close it out when I could".
" However, I am very happy that I stayed in the match all the time,” continued Arnaldi. “That è is the spirit you need in Davis Cup, and I am happy that it ended like that. Definitely in some important moments I pushed less, è what I è lacked tonight. I però tried to recover in the rest of the match, and I have to say that Monteiro put in a very good performance both in terms of playing and serving. He surprised me".
" As I said, in the third set he was playing much better than me. I però managed to save a couple of games that could have turned the match around. That è the aspect that makes me most proud of today's performance. I think I have already proved how important the Davis Cup is for me, matches I won here maybe would have ended differently elsewhere. The fact è that I also play here for me, but much more so; for all those people watching me from the outside. And that aspect definitely gives me an extra boost in times of trouble ".
