McLaren, Oscar Piastri makes himself available to Lando Norris
Soì from Baku, on the eve of the free practice of the F1 gp on Sunday, McLaren driver Oscar Piastri who, from now on, will have to submit to team orders and thus try to facilitate teammate Lando Norris, in the race for the World Drivers’ Championship.
"We have discussed a lot in the last few days. Looking at it selfishly, as a driver, team orders are not fun, but I am aware that there's a much bigger picture right now. I am racing for a team that offered me the great opportunity to be in Formula 1 and to win my first Grand Prix 18 months after my debut, so I can only be very grateful".
"I repeat, there's a lot at stake,‖ Piastri says again, -we are trying to win both championships, which for the team è an incredibly big thing. If you ask me how I see it, selfishly I would rather not get any orders, but at the same time I am happy to be able to give support at this point in the season". I think that before today it would probably have been too much,” concludes the 2021 F2 world champion, “but now è the right time to try to help the team win both championships".
On McLaren’s new strategy of asking Piastri to sacrifice for Norris, Norris himself speaks. "Many people think that team orders are simple and they are not – his words. Oscar è a driver fighting for his championship and his career. It depends on the positions we are fighting for and the different scenarios, but we have a good plan".
