Rafa Nadal, another painful step backward
No Laver Cup for Rafa Nadal
Rafa Nadal's return to the court remains an unknown. After skipping the U.S. Open, the Majorcan champion announced through the event's official profiles that he won't even take part in the 2024 edition of the Laver Cup, the end-of-season trophy that pits a selection of Europe's best tennis players against those from the rest of the world.
"It makes me really sad to inform you that I won't be able to take part in the Laver Cup in Berlin, scheduled for next week,” Nadal said.
It's a team competition and to best support Team Europe I have to do what's best for them: right now it's other players who can help the team achieve victory".
"I have so many wonderful and exciting memories related to the Laver Cup matches,” added Nadal, who accompanied Roger Federer in the doubles match that closed, in the 2022 edition, the Swiss’s career, “and I was really looking forward to being with my teammates and with Bjorn (Borg, ed.) in his last year as captain".
"I wish good luck to Team Europe, I willò cheer for them from afar" concluded Nadal, whose last appearance on court dates back to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with a second-round singles loss to Novak Djokovic and a doubles quarterfinal knockout, paired with Carlos Alcaraz, inflicted by Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram.
