Red Moon, fades first match point against American Magic
The first match point for Luna Rossa, which lost regatta #5 against American Magic, the only one contested by the Italian boat on Monday, evaporated. In fact, the weak breeze on the race course did not allow the committee to complete the scheduled matches. The Louis Vuitton Cup semifinals will resume on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
A difficult regatta, due to the limiting conditions for the AC75s, with a wind of 7/8 knots not symmetrical on the course. Starting well, Luna Rossa stretched out on the American boat already halfway up the first windward mark, turning the gate with a 17” lead, which she maintained to the next mark. In the second upwind però, after a series of very close crossings, which will cost 2 penalties to the Italian boat, the situation is reversed, with American Magic overtaking.
The gap è however, is minimal and the boats come to the following stern gate almost paired. Luna Rossa decides to turn the same buoy as the Americans, engaging inside with a second gap, but falls off the foils. At that point it becomes impossible for the Italian boat to regain flight and turn the situation around.
In the other semifinal also to be recorded was the defeat of Ineos, bent by Alinghi in the fifth race. The British remain ahead 4-1.
