Laver Cup, Team Europe misses the hook: Carlos Alcaraz and teammates called for comeback
After two days of matches the Rest of the World è ahead 8-4
It ended with the Rest of the World ahead 8 points to 4 over Team Europe on the second day of Laver Cup 2024 at the Uber Arena in Berlin. Team Europe è missed a chance to catch up with the men led by John McEnroe, who had taken the lead after Taylor Fritz won against Alexander Zverev: the doubles team that closed the day on Saturday, consisting of Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas, also succumbed to the Rest of the World team consisting of Ben Shelton and Alejandro Tabilo.
The American and the Chilean won in two sets quite easily, imposing 6-1, 6-2 in one hour and eleven minutes of play. Little to be done for the two European athletes, who by winning would have brought the score to 6-6 and instead were forced to devise a strategy to make up the 4-point disadvantage on the final day.
It is not è however, a mission impossible, not least because of the Laver Cup's special rules that on the last day of matches award 3 points for each win.
Carlos Alcaraz and his teammates will still have to win three of Sunday's four matches (one doubles and three singles) to bring the cup back to Europe for the first time since 2021.
Team Europe, led by non-player captain Bjorn Borg, fields Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud, Grigor Dimitrov and Stefanos Tsitsipas, with Flavio Cobolli and Jan-Lennard Struff named reserves. The Rest of the World, whose captain è John McEnroe, brought to Berlin, however, Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton, Alejandro Tabilo, Francisco Cerundolo and Thanasi Kokkinakis.
