Drama for Niels Hintermann who misses all of next season
Dramatic news comes from the Swiss federersci: Niels Hintermann, a 29-year-old downhill specialist from Canton Zurich, è forced to skip all of next season. During training he was doing a few weeks ago in South America, two masses were detected, one in his neck and one under his collarbone.
Back home, the tests he è underwent showed a tumor in his lymph nodes. Hintermann will now undergo outpatient chemotherapy and radiation treatment at the Hirslanden Clinic in Aarau. This treatment and convalescence is expected to take about six months, and Swiss Ski doctors hope that he will be able to return to full fitness in’winter 2025-2026.
“Unfortunately, we see once again how unpredictable and difficult life is to plan for,” said Hintermann. “The diagnosis è was, and remains, a shock, but I am infinitely grateful that this type of cancer is very treatable and that I can count on the very important support of my wife, my family, the sponsors, the Federation and of course my doctors. We are all pulling the rope in the same direction and this will give me the strength to get through this difficult period. Now it is about winning the'only battle that matters”.
Niels Hintermann è born May 5, 1995, has competed in exactly 100 World Cup races so far, winning three and finishing third four times. His first victory, which was completely by surprise, è dated Jan. 13, 2017 and came in the combined in Wengen, a real lottery race hampered by variable weather conditions in which first the slalom and then the downhill were contested, and he climbed back up; from the 23rd position obtained with bib number 51 between the narrow gates. All his other six podiums were in the downhill, and his other two victories came on March 4, 2022, and February 17, 2024, both in Kvitfjell.
