Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli advance to Vienna
Monday at the Vienna ATP 500 smiles on Italian tennis: both Flavio Cobolli and Matteo Berrettini won in their debut matches, earning a place in the round of 16. The former overcame Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, world number 62, in two sets (7-6 6-3), while the latter beat Hungary's Marton Fucsovics, number 88 in the ATP rankings, with a final score of 7-5 6-4.
In the first set between Cobolli and Davidovich Fokina it was the serve that dominated: so it came down to the tie-break, dominated by the Roman, who won it 7-1. In the second partial the balance is broken in the sixth game: at the sixth useful chance, the Italian snatched the serve from the Spaniard and kept the break until the final 6-3.
The first set between Berrettini and Fucsovics è also dominated by services, but at one step away from the tie-break, on 5-5, the Hungarian gave up the serve to the blue who did not forgive and closed 7-5. In the second partial, Matteo placed the surgical break in the seventh game and then closed on 6-4 final.
Berrettini and Cobolli are the first two tennis players to advance to the round of 16 of the Erste Bank Open: the former will face the winner of the match between Frances Tiafoe, fifth seed, and Cameron Norrie, while the latter will face the winner of the match between Alex De Minaur, second seed, and Jan-Lennard Struff.
