Jannik Sinner-Daniil Medvedev, act 15: all the history
Jannik Sinner-Daniil Medvedev, act 15: all the background
It will be Jannik Sinner-Daniil Medvedev again on the final day of the Ilie Nastase Group of the ATP Finals. Despite wins over Alex De Minaur and Taylor Fritz both in two sets, the world number one has not yet qualified for the semifinals. To do so, he only needs to win one set against the Russian, but even in the event of a loss the South Tyrolean has almost all combinations on his side to enter the penultimate act (Jannik Sinner in the semifinals if…).
The match between Sinner and Medvedev, which will close the program on the penultimate day of the group stage, è scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on the center court of Turin's Inalpi Arena. The record between the world number one and number four is perfectly even, with 7 wins apiece. Medvedev dominated the early stages of their rivalry, winning the first six matches, but Sinner has won seven of the last eight.
The Russian è won twice at the Marseille ATP 250 (2020, 2021), once at the ATP Finals (2021), at the ATP 500 Vienna (2022) and Rotterdam (2023, in the final), and at the Miami Masters 1000 Miami (2023, also in the final). The Azure has triumphed three times in the final with Medvedev (ATP 500 Beijing and Vienna in 2023 and at the Australian Open in 2024), twice in the semifinals (ATP Finals 2023 and Masters 1000 Miami 2024) and twice in the quarters (Us Open and Masters 1000 Shanghai in 2024). The Russian's only win with the Highlander this year came in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.
"Medvedev è was one of my key points to evolve as a player, because I struggled a lot to beat him – said Sinner in Turin. Now every match è quite open, you never know what will happen. È a very tough opponent".
"To beat [Jannik] you have to play a perfect game – Medvedev words. From the beginning to the end, you have to be there, you have to make him physically tired and make him work. If you can't do that from the beginning, he takes control of the match and it's hard to break his rhythm. A very, very tough opponent, especially here in Italy".
