Davis Cup: Australia-USA 2-1, Ebden/Thompson doubles triumph decisive
Australia pulls off the feat and eliminates the U.S. in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Davis Cup. After Thanasi Kokkinakis succeeded in three sets over Ben Shelton and Alex De Minaur lost in two sets to Taylor Fritz, it was Matthew Ebden and Jordan Thompson who gave the oceanic national team qualification, winning in the decisive doubles with a score of 6-4 6-4 over the pair formed by Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul.
In the first set è the Australian pair got off to a rocket start, finding a three-games-to-one lead in the first four games. The American duo tried to make a comeback, but Ebden and Thompson were adept at maintaining the break they won in the third game until the final 6-4.
The second set è characterized by great balance, with both teams managing to keep their respective turnovers. What made the difference, however, was still the Asutralians who gave the decisive acceleration in the eighth game and with a 3-0 partial break, closed the score and detached the pass for the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Australia will face the winner of the challenge between Italy and Argentina.
