Europa League: Roma eliminated, Lazio ahead
Lazio continues its Europa League adventure, Roma does not. In the return leg of the round of 16, in fact, the Biancocelesti stopped Viktoria Plzen at the Stadio Olimpico at 1-1, earning them access to the quarterfinals. It was worse, however, for the Giallorossi, who, after going down 10 at the 11' of the first half, were swept 3-1 by Athletic Bilbao, saying goodbye to the competition.
Only eleven minutes passed and the episode that decided the match arrived: Hummels lost a bloody ball in midfield and was forced to foully stop Sannadi, who was sprinting solo toward Svilar. After VAR verification, the match director draws the red card for a last man foul.
Roma tried to hold on with the man down, but in the final minutes of the first half came the cold shower for the Giallorossi: Inaki Williams crossed from the left side into the middle for his brother Nico who, with the complicity of Angeliño, beat Svilar.
In 68', the Basques found the double on the development of a corner: Berenguer crossed from the crossbar toward the second post, where Berchiche jumped higher than anyone and again slotted past the Giallorossi goalkeeper. At 82' Athletic Bilbao drops the tic-tac-toe again with Nico Williams, who makes the most of a splendid action started by Berchiche.
