Federica Brignone and Sofia Goggia, dream double.

SuperG Azure
The very large audience in La Thuile è was rewarded. Federica Brignone netted victory number 37 of her career, in the second Aosta Valley SuperG, and podium number 83, minus 5 from the legend Alberto Tomba. And, of course, she effectively got her hands on her second overall World Cup, after the one already life in 2020. The arithmetic is missing (there are 382 points of the Valle d’Aosta woman’s lead over Lara Gut-Behrami, now fourth), but with four races to go before the end of the season, one in each discipline, it seems impossible that the Swiss can overturn the ranking, also because neither contender normally takes part in the slalom.
Returning to the race, the line of Italian double wins in history is lengthened. Today, women’s Italy puts in double number 15, thanks in part to Sofia Goggia’s second place, just one hundredth behind her teammate. The last one-two was in the downhill in Garmisch, last January 25, when Federica Brignone (in her tenth center of the season) won again, ahead of Sofia Goggia by one hundredth. Exactly the same as today.
On the third step of the podium goes the French Romane Miradoli, detached by only 5 hundredths from Brignone, while è sixth Elena Curtoni, 11/a è Marta Bassino, 20/a Roberta Melesi, 24/a Laura Pirovano. Out of the thirty Asja Zenere.
Brignone acquires a new red bib, that of the super-G, although only by 5 points (570 to 565) and it will be the Sun Valley race that will decide the winner. Third è Goggia at 104 points, so she will no longer be able to compete for the final victory. The other red bib, Brignone took it in the downhill, 16 points ahead of Cornelia Huetter and 34 ahead of Goggia. In the giant slalom, however, Brignone trails Alice Robinson by just 20 points. Next week’s U.S. races will be really interesting, providing all the verdicts.
