Paolo Simoncelli returns on Jorge Martin's accident: tough stance

With a cold mind, four days now passed since the accident in Qatar that forced Jorge Martin to another hospitalization after those in February, Paolo Simoncelli has made a clear and sincere statement, who did not spare a series of criticisms, from the conformation of the tracks to the management of rules and penalties.

“We leave Qatar grateful, not for what happened but for what didn–t happen,– said the Sic58 Squadra Corse manager.

Martin came out ‘almost unscathed’ after falling and then being run over. Fortunately he was hit ten centimeters away from the point of no return. It was not time, it was not fate, call it what you will…in that handful of inches lay tragedy”.

“And that’s where I get to thinking – the late Marco’s dad later explained – about the famous curbs ‘Misano‘. Meanwhile, the now lighter and lighter rims to chase performance at all costs, they bend, they get damaged and every time it is a cost to the teams. And then perhaps they have been given the green light a little too lightly. Born to protect, but too often a source of problems have their share of responsibility”.

“The other part has it the fact that drivers today have no rules – Simoncelli further remarked -They know that out of the corner there is no more gravel, no more ravine and it becomes the ‘off-track festival’. There is asphalt, and that changes everything. Who dares, does not pay. Who goes long, gets back on the track with no problem. He who never makes a mistake–what advantage does he have? ”

“We continue to reward daring and penalize accuracy. I have been saying this for a long time: we need a clear rule. For example, if you go out you get a second penalty. Or, since ditches with crocodiles we can’t put in, it’s back to good old gravel. Where getting it wrong has a price. Where every action on the track weighs and teaches” concluded Paolo Simoncelli.
