Madrid Masters 1000, men’s draw: pairings of the eight Italians

Still briefly without Jannik Sinner, who will be able his return to competition from next May 5, the ATP circuit is preparing for the Madrid Masters 1000, whose men’s main draw was drawn on Monday’s day.

The men’s main draw features the names of eight Italian athletes. Six of these will start from the first round, while Lorenzo Musetti and Matteo Berrettini will benefit from a ‘bye’ and enter the scene from the second round.

In the upper part, Federico Cinà will face Coleman Wong, an athlete from Hong Kong, in a wild-card match, while Flavio Cobolli will face Fabian Maroszan from Hungary. In the lower part the greatest concentration of athletes from the Bel Paese: already in the second round Matteo Berrettini, number 30 seed, will face the winner of the match between Learner Tien and Marcos Giron, while Lorenzo Musetti, number 10 in the seeding, will face one between Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Hamad Medjedovic.

Still at the lower end, Luciano Darderi will make his first-round debut against Frenchman Quentin Halys, Mattia Bellucci will face Bosnian Damir Dzumhur, Matteo Arnaldi awaits a tennis player from the qualifiers (with Novad Djokovic waiting for the winner in the second round) and Lorenzo Sonego, finally, will face a level-headed opponent Miomir Kecmanovic, with the prospect of playing against Alex de Minaur in the next round.

The Madrid Open has been held, in its current version, since 2002, with Andra Agassi the first winner of a final that in fact was not played, due to Jiri Novak’s injury forfeit. The tennis player who has won the tournament the most times is Rafael Nadal with five editions won (2005, 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2017), last year’s triumph was Andrey Rublev, winner in the final against Felix Auger-Aliassime.
