Carlo Calcagni expresses all his bitterness

Carlo Calcagni, Colonel of the Role of Honor of the Italian Army, is a Paralympic athlete of the highest level and is making a collection of world and national records by making the Tricolor fly high. And, through a note, he expressed all his bitterness.

“With the last competition held in Rome, I had the honor of recording a new record wearing, with pride and respect, the jersey of the Defense Paralympic Sports Group. An achievement that adds to the three Italian titles with three world records in Ancona, the two gold medals with two world records in Marrakesh during the International Grand Prix and so many other achievements that I carry on not only for myself, but to worthily represent Italy, our Army and the values that have always guided me” he began.

“Yet, despite these extraordinary achievements, no signal of closeness, recognition, sharing has come from the Ministry of Defense, the Italian Army, nor from the Defense Paralympic Sports Group itself, of which I am a member with absolute dedication. Silence in Ancona. Silence in Morocco. Silence in Rome. Silence, always. I wonder, bitterly, but without rancor: why this silence?” he wondered.

“The victories are beautiful when they are shared – he added -. The deep meaning of my commitment, my daily sacrifice, my resilience in a battle that goes beyond sports, lies precisely in representing all of us, not just myself. I do not run for medals. I run to challenge the disease that tries to stop me every day. I run to prove that nothing is impossible if you have the courage not to give up. I run for those who fight in silence, for those who have lost hope, for those who cling to my every action to find the strength to get back up”.

I know well that behind every step I take, each of my achievements there are so many lives that find inspiration, that are reflected in my scars, my successes, my falls and my rebirths. And it is for them, especially for them, that I do not stop. Never. This silence, however, weighs. It weighs more than any defeat, because it leaves you alone even when you win. And so the question arises and I address it to those in charge, without controversy, but always with respect: Why so much indifference? Why does no one rejoice in my victories? I will not stop fighting, I will not stop winning, I will not stop representing the honor and dignity of our country. But I wish, humanly, that these achievements become a shared testimony of what it really means not to give up, despite everything and everyone” the champion’s conclusion.
