First Italian victory in the Giro d’Italia 2025: stage 16 was won by Christian Scaroni, who finished ahead of teammate Lorenzo Fortunato at the finish line in San Valentino (Brentonico). Isaac Del Toro remained pink jersey despite obvious difficulties.

The 203-kilometer stage that went from Piazzola sul Brenta-San Valentino saw Scaroni of Astana prevail over Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana Team) and Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull – Bora – Hansgrohe).

A challenging stage with almost 5 thousand meters of elevation gain that tested even the best riders. Among the GC men, Carapaz particularly shined, gaining on all rivals. Del Toro remained pink jersey by a few seconds.

“I am really happy to have won – are the words of Christian Scaroni -. Lorenzo Fortunato and I fought all day, and to tell the truth I was already fine this morning when it was raining. Toward the end we talked to each other and decided that I would win the stage, while he would go for the points for the Maglia Azzurra. On the last climb we pulled away from the others one by one. We were not sure if the Maglia Rosa group or Richard Carapaz would catch us. This victory is for the team”.
