Pope Leo XIV will greet the Giro d'Italia as it passes through the Vatican

Pope Leo XIV will greet, on Sunday, June 1 at 3:30 p.m., the runners of the Giro d’Italia as they pass through Vatican City State.
Also in remembrance of Pope Francis who had accepted the proposal presented by Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, and carried out together with the Governorate of Vatican City State and Athletica Vaticana.
The project of the passage of the Giro d’Italia through the Vatican – “first stage” anticipating the Jubilee of Sports scheduled for Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15 – was born on October 28, 2021 at the ceremony for the delivery to Athletica Vaticana of the certificate of recognition as an official member of the International Cycling Union. And it was presented on April 29 on Capitol Hill by Bishop Paul Tighe, Secretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education.
The start of the last stage of the 108th edition of the Giro d’Italia will take place at the Baths of Caracalla. In non-competitive mode, cyclists will enter Vatican City from Via Paolo VI through the Petrian Entrance.
The route inside the Vatican walls is about 3 kilometers long: every meter tells history and suggests spirituality, in an interweaving of art and nature with varied and unexpected fauna.
