Dramatic announcement from Bologna: Achille Polonara has leukemia. In a note posted on its official website, Virtus Bologna announced that the player is currently hospitalized at the Sant’Orsola Malpighi Hospital in Bologna, where he has already begun specific therapies.

Polonara has not played since game 2 of the Scudetto semifinal series against Olimpia Milano: he initially performed several tests for suspected mononucleosis.

This is the statement from Virtus: “Virtus Pallacanestro Bologna S.p.A. announces that over the past few weeks Achille Polonara underwent further specialized medical investigations following which the diagnosis of myeloid leukemia was made. Polonara is now hospitalized at the Sant’Orsola Malpighi Hospital in Bologna where he has already begun specific therapies. The whole Virtus Segafredo Bologna family is close to Achille and his loved ones and wishes the boy a speedy recovery. Come on Achi we are all with you, we are waiting for you!”.

Polonara in 2023 had undergone surgery for a testicular neoplasm: the player, perfectly healed, had gradually returned to activity both with Virtus and with the jersey of the Italian national team.
