Wimbledon qualifiers, Azzurra rout: only Zeppieri advances

Decidedly negative results for Italian tennis on the first day of the men’s qualifiers at Wimbledon. Out of seven Azzurri involved, in fact, only Giulio Zeppieri managed to win, qualifying for the second round.
The Roman tennis player, number 353 in the ATP rankings, beat India’s Sumit Nagal, world number 294, in three sets with a final score of 6-2 4-6 6-2 after an hour and forty minutes of play. In the next round Zeppieri will face British wild card Paul Jubb.
Not making it, however, were Federico Arnaboldi, defeated in two sets by Federico Agustin Gomez (4-6 4-6), Stefano Napolitano, beaten in two sets by Timofey Skatov (1-6 4-6), and Francesco Maestrelli, beaten in two sets by Cristian Garin (3-6 4-6).
Also eliminated were Matteo Gigante, Francesco Passaro and Andrea Pellegrino: the former succumbed to’Dutchman Chris Rodesch (2-6 4-6), the latter surrendered only in the third-set tie-break to Martin Landaluce (2-6 6-3 6-7), while the latter lost to Titouan Droguet (1-6 5-7).
