Unbelievable at Wimbledon: Alexander Zverev dropped out in the first round. In fact, the world number three was overcome in five sets by Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, number 72 in the ATP rankings, who won 7-6 6-7 6-3 6-7 6-4 after 4 hours and 40 minutes of play.

After Monday night&#8217s interruption for darkness, on the score of an even set, the German was unable to get the better of the transalpine. Rinderknech made the third set his own before being joined by Zverev, who won in the tie-break of the fourth, but in the deciding set it was the Frenchman who smiled.

The Championships draw thus loses another top 10 player after the eliminations at the opener of Holger Rune, defeated in five sets by Chilean Nicolas Jarry, Daniil Medvedev, overcome in four sets by Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, and Lorenzo Musetti, beaten in four sets by Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Zverev’s defeat is also a small regret for Matteo Berrettini. The Roman, in fact, eliminated in the opener by Majchrzak, was right in the German’s slice of the scoreboard, which he would have faced in the third round.
