Sergio Scariolo returns to Real Madrid after 23 years, signs three-year deal

Clamorous announcement by Real Madrid, which, as far as its basketball team is concerned, has decided to rely again on Sergio Scariolo for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2028.
The’former coach of, among others, Olimpia Milano and Virtus Bologna will lead the merengues after they participate in the European Championships to be held in Cyprus, Finland, Poland and Latvia.
Scariolo, who previously coached Real Madrid between 1999 and 2002, winning a championship, will take Chus Mateo’s place on the bench of the blancos.
“Sergio Scariolo, one of the most prestigious coaches in world basketball – the statement reads – arrives at Real Madrid after a brilliant career at the helm of the Spanish national team, where he became the winningest coach in its history, with a total of eight medals: 5 gold (World Cup 2019, Eurobasket 2009, Eurobasket 2011, Eurobasket 2015 and Eurobasket 2022), 1 silver (London 2012 Olympic Games) and 2 bronze (Rio 2016 Olympic Games and Eurobasket 2017). An NBA champion as an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors in the 2018-19 season, he has won 8 championships at the club level: 2 ACB Leagues, one of them with Real Madrid (1999-2000) and another with Unicaja; 1 Italian Championship with Scavolini; 2 King Cups in Spain, one with Tau CerĂ¡mica and another with Unicaja; and 1 Eurocup and 2 Italian Supercups with Virtus Bologna”.
