Carlos Alcaraz drops a set but goes into Wimbledon round of 16

Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, world No. 2 and defending champion, advanced to the round of 16 of the Wimbledon men’s singles by beating Germany’s Am-Lennard Struff, No. 125, with a score of 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-4 in two hours and 25 minutes of play.

After being the first to save break points at 1-1, Alcaraz took home the first set with five straight games and two breaks. In the third game of the second set another break for the Murcian, who had missed a ball in the first game to cash in for the sixth consecutive game.

Struff, however, immediately recovered at 2-2, and at 4-3 in his own favor he again took the serve away from Alcaraz and soon after tied the set count. A single break decides the third set and it is Carlos who does it in the second game, then he also has a double-break ball at 5-1 but the set he quietly takes it home.

In the fourth set no break point until 3-2 for Struff, who has one but does not exploit it, then, on 4-4 the German, after missing as many as six balls to hold serve, surrenders the serve on the first break point of the game and soon after Alcaraz closes the match by holding serve to zero. Now the defending champion in the round of 16 will face Russia’s Andrey Rublev.
