Matteo Berrettini, endless ordeal: new step backwards weighs on rankings

In addition to Jannik Sinner, another of the Italian tennis bigwigs has opted out of the Toronto Masters 1000: this is Matteo Berrettini, who after his elimination in the first round in the Wimbledon tournament, at the hands of Kamil Majchrzak of Poland, did not take the court again, weighed down by physical problems.
Berrettini’s new setback will weigh in no small part on the ranking level: as early as next Monday, the Roman is set to drop out of the Top 50 (in the live ranking updated as of Thursday, he dropped from 42nd to 57th position), and the inability to pick up points in the Canadian tournament will prevent him from rising again any time soon. The hope of Berrettini’s fans is to see him back on court in Cincinnati and the US Open.
There will therefore be seven Italians on the Toronto roster, with Musetti, who will have the No. 3 seed, leading the tricolor troop: in addition to Carrarino, there will also be Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Arnaldi and Lorenzo Sonego, already in North America and present at the Washington tournament, as well as Luciano Darderi, coming from Umago, Mattia Bellucci, stopped by choice from Wimbledon, and Matteo Gigante, who was granted a wild card.
The pass granted to Gigante is the result of a cooperation agreement between the Italian and Canadian federations: the latter will be able to have a wild card available to assign to one of its athletes in the women’s draw at the Internazionali d’Italia 2026. For Gigante, this year’s will be her first participation in the Toronto Masters 1000.
