The ordeal continues for Matteo Berrettini, who will also miss the Us Open, starting next Aug. 24 at Flushing Meadows. The Roman has removed himself from the New York Slam’s entry list: in his place, the American Alex Holt will enter the draw.

For l’Azzurro this is the fifth consecutive withdrawal after forfeits on European clay at the ATP 250s in Gstaad and Kitzbühel, where in both he was defending the title he won in 2024, and at the Toronto and Cincinnati Masters 1000s on American cement.

The last match played by Berrettini remains the first round at Wimbledon, when he was defeated in five sets by Kamil Majchrzak of Poland. Just after that match the Roman had stated, “Honestly this is not the way I want to be on the court. I need to take some time and think about my future because this is not the way I want to be on the court”.

In the ATP rankings Berrettini has dropped out of the top 50: fortunately for him at the Us Open he would only defend the second round, where he was defeated by Taylor Fritz, who then surrendered in the final to Jannik Sinner.
