Reigning champion Europe retained the Ryder Cup trophy, golf’s prestigious team competition, by withstanding a comeback by the United States at the end of the tournament’s third day in New York.

After being comfortably ahead Saturday night after the pairs matches, Rory McIlroy’s Europeans had to struggle through the singles against the Americans’ comeback before being saved by a putt by Ireland’s Shane Lowry.

Lowry&#8217s putt brought him into a tie with American Russell Henley, clinching the half point that put Europe up 14-11 with three games to go, all the hosts needed to retain the trophy after their 2023 victory in Rome.
