When Italy plays in Davis Cup: history with Austria

After Jannik Sinner’s triumph at the ATP Finals in Turin, the tennis season comes to a close with the Davis Cup Finals, scheduled from Tuesday, Nov. 18 to Sunday, Nov. 23 in Bologna, Italy. The Azzurri, defending champions but lacking the world number two as well as Lorenzo Musetti, will face Austria in the quarterfinals.
The match between captain Filippo Volandri’s team and the one led by Jurgen Melzer is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 4 p.m. on the indoor concrete at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna. The winner will face one of France or Belgium in the semifinals.
There are six previous meetings between Italy and Austria in the Davis Cup with the Azzurri holding a 5-1 advantage: after winning the first five direct confrontations, Italy surrendered decisively to the Austrians (0-5) in the last meeting, valid for the quarterfinals, played in Vienna in 1990.
Without Sinner and Musetti, Volandri will rely on Flavio Cobolli, Lorenzo Sonego and Matteo Berrettini as far as singles is concerned, while Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori are set to play their cards in a possible doubles match.
