NBA Europe: project takes more and more shape, Euroleague trembles

“Our talks with various stakeholders in Europe have reinforced our belief that the creation of a new league on the continent represents a’huge opportunity” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. These recent statements by the NBA’s number 1 have certified how the NBA Europe project is now underway. As is well known, the start of the new competition has been set for 2027. A date that is worrying the entire European basketball system, at least the part that would like nothing to change.
However, already in the coming months, important developments are expected that could trigger a real revolution within European basketball. It is no secret that Euroleague is at great risk. The’advent of a project like NBA Europe will, of course, lead to a rift with the Euroleague. The two leagues will have to find a way to coexist, assuming it is possible. The NBA model, based on economic sustainability, is complicated for a’Euroleague that sees its clubs losing large sums of money.
As if that weren’t enough, some clubs in the current Euroleague already seem willing to listen carefully to what those who are advancing the more than revolutionary NBA Europe project are proposing. Olimpia Milano, first and foremost, has reportedly closed no doors and is just waiting to understand the real benefits of a “move” from the Euroleague to NBA Europe. In Rome, however, they can’t wait for everything to become official. The dream of seeing great basketball again in the capital city is taking more and more shape.
It remains to be seen whether and how the’Euroleague will be organized so as not to risk “disappearing” before the ambitious and economically attractive NBA Europe project. Several clubs have already let it be known that they will not abandon the “old” Euroleague but nothing is decided yet. There could be developments soon and no one knows where they will lead.
There are those who say that NBA Europe promoters are also willing to pay any penalties that clubs would face to get out of their existing contracts with the’Euroleague. In short, there will be significant changes in the world of European basketball in 2026. NBA Europe is ready to get serious.
