Outrage in Russia over Daniil Medvedev’s madness in his match against Matteo Berrettini

Sport.ru is one of the leading sports sites in Russia. And it was not slow in commenting on what happened in Monte Carlo, with Daniil Medvedev overwhelmed by Matteo Berrettini with a double 6-0 and starring in a skit complete with a smashed racket.

“I’m not sure Daniil has ever played such a match in his professional career, without winning a single game,” wrote the live commentator. “Yet, this match had started so promisingly for the Russian. Medvedev had two break points in the first game, but Berrettini miraculously saved his serve, which made him very happy. And what happened next … we all saw it.”

“This match left an extremely bitter aftertaste. Daniil’s start of the season on clay could not have been worse. We hope that this bad match will not demoralize our tennis player and he can show a different game at the next tournament in Madrid.”

“It was a strange match, I did not expect to play so well and I did not expect him to struggle so much, it was one of the best matches of my life. I suffered in the first game, but then I did not expect to win so cleanly,” were instead the words of an incredulous Berrettini at the end of the match.
