All hope is lost for Lucas Trejo. The earthquake destroyed the Argentine soccer player’s family, taking the life of his wife and children, who lived with him in Venezuela, where he plays for the Marítimo de La Guaira club.

The earthquake hit Playa Grande—where the soccer player’s family lived—hard, completely destroying the building where they lived. Lucas Trejo survived because he was in Caracas for a cup match; in despair, he turned to rescue teams in the hope of finding his loved ones still alive.

The bodies of his wife, Yanina Maranella, and their two children, Aaron and Ainhoa, were found on Saturday evening. The player, who had not heard from them for three days, had launched an appeal on social media, garnering the support of thousands of people.

“We share in the grief of player Lucas Trejo over the loss of his wife, Yanina Maranella, and his children, Aaron and Ainhoa Trejo. May they rest in peace, and may Lucas and all his loved ones find comfort,” reads the club’s statement.

Trejo, a native of Córdoba, has played throughout his career in Greece, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. In Venezuela, he played for six teams and had been signed by Marítimo last February. Devastated by grief, Trejo posted a photo of his entire family together on his Instagram profile.
