Anyone who didn’t watch the game and saw the final score of the match between the Indonesian and Omani U18 women’s national teams immediately thought there must be a mistake. But it’s all true: the Indonesian girls defeated their opponents by a staggering 127-6 on the first day of the U18 Asian Cup Division B. A result that, inevitably, caused a stir among fans and insiders.

When sports produce such extreme scores, opinions are divided, and the case of the 121-point margin between Indonesia and Oman’s U18 women’s teams is no exception, with social media becoming the usual battleground. For many, a game like this teaches no one anything, and such lopsided matches risk becoming a humiliation rather than a learning experience. The less-equipped teams end up not even touching the ball, unable to build any plays, and lacking any technical examples from which to learn.

On the other hand, there are those who see the issue differently, arguing that these results are part of the sport and that the stronger teams have the right and the duty to play at their best, without slowing down. The debate, in reality, is not new: every time a competition produces a lopsided result (as often happens at the youth level), the discussion about competitive balance, player development, educational value, and tournament structure is reignited.

There are, in fact, specific rules in some tournaments to prevent excessively lopsided games, but FIBA does not have such rules for international competitions. What is certain is that the game between Indonesia and Oman—with quarter scores of 36-1, 34-2, 24-3, and 33-0—represents a new chapter in a debate that will continue to spark discussion.
