FIFA President Gianni Infantino put all the criticism aside and, at a press conference just a few hours before the final between Spain and Argentina, he heaped praise on the 2026 World Cup: “I imagined it would be a magnificent event, but not on this scale.”

“I never imagined an event with this atmosphere, this celebration, and this energy,” Infantino gushed. “It was the most incredible event in human history. Not just the greatest World Cup, but the greatest sporting, social, and cultural event humanity has ever experienced. I think we’ll have to invent new words to describe it,” were the decidedly over-the-top, Donald Trump-style remarks from the head of world soccer, who has been heavily criticized in recent weeks for his management and organization of the event.

“This final is a gift from the gods to soccer,” Infantino said in a lofty tone. The FIFA president announced that Donald Trump, the tournament’s host, will present the World Cup to the winners tonight: a complete departure from tradition, which called for the FIFA president himself to perform the quintessential symbolic gesture of the World Cup.

This isn’t the first time Trump has carved out a starring role for himself at a major soccer event: in the Club World Cup final between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, he remained on stage even after the trophy was presented, drawing the attention of the cameras amid the embarrassment of some players and boos from part of the crowd.
