Ceuta, a tragedy within a tragedy: Soccer player Faten Ben Amar El Aziz dies at just 20 years old

The migration crisis in Ceuta continues to claim lives. Among the more than eighty migrants who have drowned in recent days while attempting to reach the Spanish enclave from Moroccan territory, there is one story that has broken the hearts of soccer fans: that of Faten Ben Amar El Aziz, a 20-year-old soccer player for Maghreb Atletico Tetuan.

The young player died while trying to cross the maritime border. “She wasn’t seeking fame or adventure, but a better life and a future on the other side of the border. A dream shattered before it even began,” wrote the club for which the 20-year-old played soccer, her greatest passion.

The Moroccan Union of Professional Soccer Players (UMFP) also issued a statement filled with grief. “President Mustapha El Hadaoui and all members of the organization express their sincere condolences and deep sympathy to her family, friends, teammates, and the entire soccer community in the country. We pray that her family finds comfort at a time marked by a loss that is as unjust as it is incomprehensible.”

The death of Faten Ben Amar El Aziz is not just a personal tragedy: it is a symbol of a collective tragedy that continues to unfold along the coasts of North Africa.
