Fatal Heat Stroke: 26-Year-Old Rugby Star Dies

The rugby world is mourning the passing of Saimoni Vunilagi, a player for the Japanese second-division club Kyushu Electric Power Kyuden Voltex. The 26-year-old had been hospitalized on August 3 following a severe case of heatstroke and, despite the doctors’ efforts, did not survive.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce that Saimoni Vunilagi has passed away at Kinen Hospital in Fukuoka. At the end of team practice on Monday, August 3, 2026, Saimoni suffered a severe illness attributable to heatstroke. He was promptly hospitalized and received the necessary intensive care, but passed away despite the constant efforts of the medical staff,” reads the statement released by the club.

“His teammates, the coaching staff, and the entire management are devastated by this sudden loss. Although he had only recently joined the Kyuden Voltex, his generous spirit and the extraordinary power of his play had already won everyone over, raising high expectations for the upcoming season.”

“We come together in memory of Saimoni, offering a prayer for the repose of his soul and expressing our deepest and most sincere condolences to his family. At this time of profound grief, we respectfully ask that his loved ones be granted the utmost privacy,” the club concluded.
