Lazio has chosen the quickest and most practical way to strengthen its offense: Bamba Dieng will indeed be joining Gennaro Gattuso’s squad for the upcoming season. As reported by Sky Sport, the Biancocelesti have finalized a deal with the forward—who represented Senegal at the 2022 and 2026 World Cups—who became a free agent after last season with Lorient; he will sign his contract after passing his physical. Lazio’s decision marks a change of course from the path leading to Mauro Icardi, who nonetheless remains the front office’s dream signing.

Icardi, 33, had expressed openness to the possibility of returning to Italy and playing for Lazio. Discussions with Lazio are underway, but several issues remained to be resolved: his salary—which the Argentine would be willing to reduce but not down to the 3 million plus bonuses offered so far— the related commissions for the agency representing his interests, and the contract length—with his request for a three-year deal complicating negotiations to the point that the club decided to shift its focus to another striker, finding Dieng willing to join.

Lazio, in fact, could not afford to wait, especially since their elimination from the Coppa Italia forced an immediate decision. Dieng, coming off a season in which he scored double-digit goals while playing for Lorient, represents a quick and sustainable solution. Modern, versatile, and capable of operating across the entire attacking front, the Senegalese forward arrives to compete for a starting spot with Ratkov and Dia.

Dieng’s arrival, however, inevitably shifts the balance in the race for Icardi. Lazio isn’t closing the door on the Argentine, but the priority has shifted: the signing of the Senegalese player allows the Biancocelesti to negotiate more calmly with Icardi, who—if he truly wants to return to Serie A—will have to reach a compromise with Lazio’s management.
