Pallacanestro Varese kicked off its preseason with a 92-72 victory over JuVi Cremona. The first scrimmage of the new season allowed the red-and-whites to return to a game-like situation after the first few weeks dedicated to training. More than the result itself, the game served as a test for Coach Giannis Kastritis and his staff to evaluate the initial progress of a thoroughly revamped team and begin working on the chemistry of the new squad.

Varese took the court without Amedeo Della Valle, David Duke Jr., and Isaiah Roby, while William McDowell-White and Ismaël Kamagate saw limited playing time. These absences allowed the coaching staff to give more playing time to other players on the roster, experimenting with different rotations and strategies and gathering initial insights for the remainder of the preseason.

As the minutes ticked by, the red-and-white team gradually increased its intensity and pace, finding greater consistency on both offense and defense. These are encouraging signs, even though this is only the first step on a journey in which the team will need to continue refining its coordination, chemistry, and playing identity.

On an individual level, Hunter Hale stood out in particular, leading Varese in scoring with 22 points. There were also strong performances from captain Matteo Librizzi, who scored 13 points, Davide Alviti, who scored 12, and Nate Renfro, who scored 10.

Pre-season training, however, is only just beginning. The upcoming games will offer Kastritis new opportunities to assess the team’s progress and gradually translate the work done in practice into greater chemistry on the court.
