Very few would have predicted that, on the eve of the third matchday of the Premier League, Ipswich Town would be ahead of Liverpool. Yet that’s exactly the case: the Tractor Boys head into their match against the Reds—scheduled for Friday at 9 p.m. Italian time (8 p.m. local time)—with three points in the standings, compared to the two held by the team coached by Andoni Iraola, which has gotten off to a slower-than-expected start.

Ipswich’s three points came on Matchday 1, thanks to a 2-1 home win over Sunderland that was decided in the 90th minute, when Clarke finally broke the deadlock created by earlier goals from Emersonn for the Blues and Angulo for the Black Cats. Gary O’Neil’s team also advanced in the Carabao Cup by defeating Leicester 3-1 (with goals from Egeli and Nuñez, the latter scoring twice), only to suffer a crushing 5-2 loss at Manchester United on Sunday, August 30 (Davis and Chuba Akpom scored for the Blues).

Liverpool, on the other hand, started the season without a loss but also without a win: on the first matchday, they drew 2-2 at Newcastle, with Gakpo and Szoboszlai (the latter on a penalty kick in the 99th minute) equalizing goals by Elanga and Willock, respectively. The following matchday brought another 2-2 draw, this time at Anfield against Nottingham Forest: here too, the opposing team took the lead twice (first through Ndoye and then through Gibbs-White), only to be pegged back by Isak and Muñoz. Iraola is therefore looking for his first official win with the Reds.
